Lyall Cameron wasn’t ready for Rangers, and was a very unfortunate victim of circumstance.
Rangers fans frequently ask where he is, but an Ibrox Noise analysis earlier this season revealed why both he and Findlay Curtis were to be loaned out.
Ranking lowly on data, which is how Rangers measure things these days, both Curtis and Cameron have failed to deliver.
It has hard not to feel a little sympathy especially for Cameron, whose circumstances were cruel.
He was signed in January 2025 as a summer pre-contract by former Director of Football Recruitment Nils Koppen for then-manager Philippe Clement.
Unfortunately by the time Cameron showed up, the Vegan Wonder had also appeared and he wasn’t interested in Rangers or Cameron.
He got a few appearances but didn’t really shine and disappeared. He even had to give an interview in which he dismissed the notion he wasn’t a Martin signing.
But then by the time Martin had slung his hook and Danny Rohl took over, Cameron’s Rangers fate was sealed.
Rohl just doesn’t rate him or Curtis, it’s really that simple. It has nothing to do with age, Cameron is 23 and more than mature enough, but he is a victim of happenstance.
Findlay Curtis also finds himself exiting likely to Kilmarnock, and fans too want to see him play.
Calls for both to play reduce every time Rangers win without them, funnily enough.
The biggest nail in the coffin? Rohl just signed Chukwuani in Cameron’s position, at just one year his senior. He will be first choice by a mile.
Cameron was unlucky. He’s a decent wee player but that’s about it – Rangers was too big for him and Danny Rohl hasn’t ever been interested in him.
In fact, in one of his earliest pressers, Rohl confirmed Cameron wasn’t injured, when pressed on why he wasn’t in the matchday squad.
That was all. He just didn’t rate or need the former Dundee man.
This will always happen at football clubs. Players fans want to see just don’t feature under certain managers – Cameron never really featured under any manager since his move.
Nice lad we’re sure, but the wrong move for Lyall Cameron and it just didn’t work out.
If he does go to Aberdeen, it’s que sera.
