Mainz 05 may yet face a dramatic deadline-day decision over Kaishu Sano, with an unnamed Premier League club reportedly submitting a concrete offer for the Japanese international. According to Sport Bild, the English club has been working intensively on a deal for the 25-year-old despite Mainz recently growing increasingly confident that Sano would remain beyond the summer transfer window.

The German tabloid reports that the Rheinhessen now have a concrete proposal on the table worth closer to €30m than the €50m-€60m figures previously associated with a possible late sale. The offer is nevertheless said to contain substantial sell-on participation capable of providing Mainz with significant future income.

The structure has apparently given club officials something to think about despite the extraordinarily late stage of the window.

Premier League club tests firm Mainz Sano stance

Mainz had previously appeared determined not to entertain such a scenario. Mainz sporting CEO Christian Heidel explicitly warned earlier in the window that the club could not contemplate losing Sano in the final days because there would be insufficient time to procure an adequate replacement.

That stance is now reportedly being tested.

The offer remains well below the enormous valuation Mainz had previously attached to their most important midfielder, but €30m plus significant participation in a future sale would still constitute an extraordinary return on a player acquired from Kashima Antlers for a fraction of that amount only two summers ago.

Sano’s estimated market value has skyrocketed since he arrived in Germany, rising from €2.5m two years ago to €50m in the latest Transfermarkt update. The now 16-times-capped Japanese international remains Mainz’s ‘Iron Man’, logging near maximum minutes across all competitions for his Bundesliga club.

Mainz forced into difficult deadline calculation

The timing remains the biggest obstacle. Mainz’s entire midfield structure has been constructed around Sano. His work next to Amiri remains fundamental to the manner in which the team protect its back line, recover possession and initiate attacking phases through the middle.

That qualification now feels especially relevant. Approximately €30m plus a lucrative sell-on clause would represent another spectacular piece of Mainz transfer business. Losing Sano with virtually no time to replace him could simultaneously weaken the team far beyond what the immediate financial return can repair.

The unnamed Premier League club has now forced Heidel and Bungert to choose between those two realities.

Only days after Mainz appeared to have successfully closed the door on a late Sano departure, one of the most consequential Bundesliga transfers of deadline day may suddenly be back in play.
