Kicker reports that Mainz striker Nelson Weiper will not be traveling with his Bundesliga club to Norway this week to contest a Conference League playoff fixture. Already left out of Mainz’s DFB Pokal squad yesterday due to issues stemming from a contractual dispute, signs are strongly pointing to a messy divorce. Kicker’s Thiemo Müller further notes that Mainz are actively seeking a replacement for Weiper on the transfer market.
Weiper has officially been demoted to the club reserves and will be remaining there until the transfer window closes on September 1st. In principle a lot could still happen between now and the close of the window. Should Mainz not be able to find a taker and procure a replacement for the 20-year-old, there could still be reconciliation.
Müller nevertheless notes that Mainz have made an internal decision about the future of the talented Germany U21 international. A new striker could be unveiled very soon. Club management are working hard on bringing in a new forward. Müller leads his piece with the headline “Tischtuch zerschnitten” (“tablecloth cut”).
The German idiomatic expression refers to the archaic manner in which German divorces were once conducted. Separated spouses divided up one of the household’s most prized possessions by snapping it in half. Mainz have decided they must sell Weiper this summer rather than risk losing him on a free in January.
