Mali vs Madagascar: a clash with different ambitions

Mali hosts Madagascar this Friday as part of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. While the Eagles have almost no chance of qualifying, the Bareas are still aiming to at least secure a playoff spot.

The contrast between the two teams is stark. Mali, sitting third in their group with 15 points, has failed to keep up the pace in the World Cup race. Despite a recent 2-0 win over Chad, Tom Saintfiet’s men will be playing mainly for pride and to end their campaign on a high note in front of their home crowd.

On the other hand, the Malagasy side is experiencing a completely different momentum. Second in the group with 19 points, they have won four of their last five matches, including a crucial 2-1 victory over Comoros. Corentin Martins’ squad impresses with its solidity and consistency.

Historically, these two nations have met only twice: one Malian victory and one draw. Even though Mali has nothing left to play for, this encounter promises to be balanced and open.
