Malick Fofana looks set to leave Lyon before the window closes, with keeping the 21-year-old deemed virtually impossible after the club failed to reach the Champions League, L’Équipe reports.

The Belgian international had wanted to stay and play in the Champions League with Lyon, an option no longer available.

With the player’s preference unattainable and the club under pressure to raise funds, Lyon are working towards a sale this summer. Qualification would have strengthened their hand and lifted Fofana’s valuation.

The club had planned to sanction a move next summer, targeting around €50m after a full season of growth. A lower figure is now likely given their urgency to sell.

Liverpool and Bayern Munich have previously shown interest in the forward.
