Manchester City left-back Nico O’Reilly has been forced to withdraw from the England squad due to injury and has returned home.

The 21-year-old played the full 90 minutes during England’s 3-2 defeat to Spain last weekend. However, he was ruled out of the Three Lions’ 2-0 victory over Czech Republic in Prague on Tuesday.

After that match, Thomas Tuchel was hopeful that O’Reilly would be available for England’s next fixture against Croatia. “He was not available today, was not on the bench. So we have three days now and we will try everything and push everyone to be available,” said the England boss “Hopefully Nico can come back but for today was not available.”

Despite the German coach’s optimism of a fast recovery, from what he described as a “minor” injury, O’Reilly has now withdrawn from the squad.

The 21-year-old will now return to Manchester, where he will find his club in a state of turmoil. City have been found guilty of serious financial breaches by the Premier League and are expected to face hefty sanctions.

Nevertheless, City’s board maintain their innocence and are expected to appeal the verdict. In the past 24 hours, Pep Guardiola has spoken out in support of his former employers, whilst sponsor Etihad Airways have threatened legal action against the Premier League.
