Nico O’Reilly returns to a club in turmoil
Nico O’Reilly has left England’s camp to return to Manchester City and receive treatment for an injury.
The full-back played the full duration of England’s 3-2 defeat by Spain last weekend but subsequently missed training and played no part in the victory over the Czech Republic.
Thomas Tuchel has not confirmed the nature of his injury, but has described it as “minor,” suggesting ahead of playing in Prague that he was facing a late fitness test.
But it has now been confirmed O’Reilly will return to Manchester for further assessment on the issue.
Nobody has been called up in his place ahead of England’s subsequent Nations League matches with Croatia and the Czech Republic.
Lewis Hall got the nod to start at left-back in Prague and put in an impressive shift. He will be expected to keep his place in Rijeka this weekend, with no other natural left-backs in the squad.
He leaves behind his City team-mates Elliot Anderson and Marc Guehi, both of whom featured against the Czech Republic despite the match kicking off mere hours after the club was found guilty by the Premier League of gross financial misconduct. City maintains its innocence and plans to appeal the verdict.
Elsewhere, England’s Under-21s have been hit with a spate of withdrawals as Jobe Bellingham and Lewis Miley return to Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle, respectively.
Everton’s Harrison Armstrong and Liverpool’s Trey Nyoni have been promoted in their place ahead of matches against Slovakia and the Republic of Ireland over the next week.
