Manchester City maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City.

Erling Haaland provided the decisive moment, powering a header past Carl Rushworth from Antoine Semenyo’s excellent cross to register his 300th career goal.

City had to work for the three points, with Coventry threatening on several occasions. Taiwo Awoniyi fired narrowly wide after pouncing on a loose pass, while Jack Rudoni saw a diving header brilliantly saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Italy international was crucial again after the break, denying Loum Tchaouna before producing a superb late stop to keep out substitute Ellis Simms and preserve City’s lead.

Haaland thought he had doubled the advantage after Enzo Fernández kept the ball alive in the box, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Rayan Cherki also struck the post as City looked for a second.

Fernández was handed his City debut following his £125m move from Chelsea, while Iliman Ndiaye also started.

The result leaves City with three wins from three, while Coventry remain without a point or goal in their first season back in the top flight.
