City out for a response after last weekend’s late blow
Manchester City take on Newcastle United in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday.
Pep Guardiola’s side hold a 2-0 advantage from the first leg, thanks to Antoine Semenyo and Rayan Cherki’s strikes at St James’ Park.
It gives City a decent cushion heading home to the Etihad Stadium, but as Eddie Howe’s Magpies showed in the opening 20 minutes at Anfield last weekend, they can be a real threat.
Newcastle were eventually defeated 4-1 by Liverpool on Saturday after a strong resurgence from the Premier League champions, who moved themselves back into Champions League contention with a big three points.
Newcastle are the current Carabao Cup holders having beaten the Reds in last year’s final, but they could have their work cut out against this City side.
That said, City looked as though they were cruising to all three points at Tottenham last weekend, before a superb fightback from Thomas Frank’s hosts - including a scorpion kick from Dominic Solanke - salvaged a point for the north London club.
It meant that City lost further ground on Arsenal in the title race, with the Gunners’ lead at the top of the table now six points.
Man City vs Newcastle is scheduled for an 8pm GMT kick-off on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
The match will take place at the Etihad Stadium.
TV channel: In the UK, the game will be televised live on Sky Sports Main Event, with coverage starting at 7.30pm ahead of an 8pm kick off.,

City have shored up their defence somewhat with the signing of Marc Guehi earlier in the transfer window.
The England international arrived in the middle of an injury crisis at centre-back for Guardiola, who had seen Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol and John Stones all ruled out for extended periods.
Max Alleyne was recalled from Watford to relieve some of the pressure on Abdukodir Khusanov and Nathan Ake, but his performances since have been hit and miss.
Guardiola revealed last Friday that Dias would return to training this week, although he was dealt a blow ahead of the Tottenham game with Jeremy Doku injured once again after he was taken off in the 2-0 win over Galatasaray.
Savinho remains sidelined with a hamstring injury, while Cherki took a knock in the draw at Spurs. However, he could be available for this match.
As for the visitors, they are also ravaged by injury.
Captain Bruno Guimaraes has sat out of the last three games with an ankle problem, while first-choice right-back Tino Livramento has a hamstring issue.
In midfield, Joelinton’s groin injury could keep him out for a matter of weeks rather than weeks, Howe assured last weekend, with the Brazilian jetting out to Barcelona to receive an injection.
Lewis Miley and Sven Botman were both benched at Anfield with Howe revealing that the pair had minor knocks with Botman nursing a tight thigh and Miley suffering knee pain.
Swedish right-back Emil Krafth is also out with a knee injury.
Two teams hit badly by injury, but that was also the case when Newcastle travelled to Merseyside last weekend.
They gave a good account of themselves, with the 4-1 scoreline ultimately harsh on the Toon, who had dominated the early exchanges and led deservedly when Anthony Gordon, playing as a centre-forward, put them ahead.
It remains to be seen whether Howe will decide to plump for a greater physical presence up top and play Nick Woltemade, or he could continue with Gordon through the middle, flanked by Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elanga or Jacob Murphy.
City, however, will be wounded from that late Spurs comeback and Guardiola will be sure to want a reaction here.
