Man United revive interest in Everton defender Branthwaite after his return to form | OneFootball

Manchester United are once again being linked with Jarrad Branthwaite, with the Everton centre-back reportedly back on their defensive shortlist after overcoming his recent injury problems. The 24-year-old has been admired at Old Trafford for some time, and his return to regular football has seemingly renewed United’s interest.

Michael Carrick’s squad was strengthened in several areas during the summer, but another long-term option at centre-back could become a priority as the club continues rebuilding around a younger core.

Branthwaite is high on Man United list

According to Football Insider, Branthwaite remains high on Man United’s list of defensive targets, with scouts continuing to monitor his performances following his return from injury.

The England international has made an encouraging start after getting back onto the pitch.

Former Everton scout Bryan King told Football Insider that Branthwaite’s early-season form could even put him back into consideration for Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.

Branthwaite also featured when Everton drew 2-2 with Man United on September 6, a match in which David Moyes’ team recovered twice from falling behind.

Everton actually finished with more shots on target, underlining the competitive defensive platform Moyes has been building around players such as Branthwaite.

Branthwaite still looks like a natural United target

It is easy to understand why Man United have not forgotten about Branthwaite.

At 24, he fits the age profile United should be targeting: experienced enough to handle Premier League football immediately but still young enough to become a major part of the defence for several seasons.

His biggest attraction is his combination of physical presence, mobility and comfort playing on the left side of central defence. That could be especially valuable as United consider the long-term makeup of their back line.

The difficulty will be persuading Everton to sell. Branthwaite is an important first-team player, and his value is unlikely to decrease if he continues performing well and returns to the England picture.

United must also decide how aggressively they want to spend. Football Insider reported this week that the club maintained a relatively controlled financial approach during the summer, despite supporters wanting more investment in the squad.
