Manchester United Women endured a brutal afternoon as they were torn apart 5-0 by Chelsea.

Eva Olid’s side were horribly exposed as they conceded 25 shots on goal and managed only two of their own in a chastening afternoon.

First half

United held out for the first 21 minutes of the match, but the truth was that Chelsea dominated from the outset until the final whistle.

Lauren James almost opened the scoring within the first two minutes but flashed an effort wide. After 10 minutes, Elisabeth Terland had a shot on goal but it was easily collected by the underworked Chelsea keeper.

On 21 minutes, United were the architects of their own downfall as Dominique Janssen failed to deal with a ball into the box and Wieke Kaptein took the ball off her toes and played in Sjoeke Nusken, who made no mistake from close range.

United failed to do much in response and, on 32 minutes, Keira Walsh’s long-range effort found the back of the net to give the Blues a comfortable 2-0 lead heading into the half-time break.

Just before the end, Lauren James curled a fine effort at goal that was stopped by Phallon Tullis-Joyce before Ellen Carpenter’s shot was blocked by new signing Andrea Medina.

The half-time whistle blew with United in all sorts of trouble.

Second half

United tried to muster some threats on the Blues’ goal but could do little with the limited times they had the ball.

After 60 minutes, it was game, set and match to Chelsea. Walsh played in the brilliant James and she drove the ball expertly past Tullis-Joyce to give Chelsea a 3-0 lead.

United began to capitulate and, after 65 minutes, Carpenter scored the visitors’ fourth.

She was played into the box and had her shot saved, but reacted fastest to tap in the rebound.

Substitute Lea Schuller almost got on the scoresheet in a rare forward move from United, but the German’s effort was blocked by the defence.

A dispirited United finally conceded their fifth in the 96th minute when Lucy Bronze pinged the ball into the back of the net after some great team play in United’s box.

The full-time whistle blew and United fans were left under no illusions as to how big Olid’s job is to turn around this underperforming side.

United will have to react fast as they next play Arsenal on Saturday evening at 17:30 BST.
