Manager reveals plan for Dowman to get England promotion

Max Dowman could eventually be considered for the senior England national team if age is not a barrier, but with Bukayo Saka and other options available in his position, the Arsenal youngster could instead continue his development with the England U21 side.

However, Dowman was invited to join the U19 side during this international window, leaving some fans wondering why he was not called up by Lee Carsley. The manager has explained that he wants to take things slowly with the highly rated youngster.

In recent years, Arsenal have developed several young talents who have progressed quickly through the age groups, with Ethan Nwaneri playing for the U21 side before reaching that age.

Nwaneri is still playing at that level as he waits for his opportunity with the senior Three Lions, while Dowman also has a bright future and appears to be moving closer to that stage of his development.

Carsley explains Dowman’s development

Carsley has several talented players in his current U21 group and has explained the approach being taken with Dowman. The manager believes the youngster will eventually be ready for the U21s, but wants to ensure the timing is right.

Carsley said via Football London:

“He’s definitely an outstanding talent. It’s inevitable that he’s going to be with the Under-21s because of his talent. But we have to make sure we do that at the right time, that he comes away with us and plays minutes and competes with the other players that are in his position.

Patience remains key for Dowman

“We had a similar issue a few years ago with Ethan Nwaneri. He was early and he made his debut and he’s done really well but there’s that tendency to push him on quickly. We have to be patient and make sure that ultimately we want them to play for the senior team for a prolonged period so we have to make sure we get the time right with that.”

Carsley’s comments underline the importance of managing Dowman’s progression carefully. Rather than rushing him through the age groups, England want to ensure he receives regular minutes and continues competing with players in his position.

Dowman’s development will therefore continue to be monitored as he progresses through the England setup. His inclusion with the U19 side gives him another opportunity to gain experience while continuing his development with Arsenal.
