Speaking on El Chiringuito TV, journalist Jose Alvarez Haya claimed that Manchester City are keeping a keen eye on Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong. It is understood that the Mancunian club are exploring a late move for the Dutch talent in this transfer window.

De Jong’s Impressive Form In La Liga

De Jong enjoyed a decent run of form at the Catalan club in the previous campaign when he put in a string of impressive displays for them at the centre of the park. The 29-year-old scored one goal and grabbed eight assists in 38 matches for Barcelona last season across all competitions.

The Dutch talent is currently among the most experienced central midfielders in La Liga. Hence, it is no surprise that the Mancunian club are hoping to get a deal over the line for him this month.

His current contract at the Catalan club will expire in the summer of 2029, which could make it difficult for Man City to land him in this transfer window.

Should Manchester City Boss Enzo Maresca Go For De Jong?

De Jong doesn’t mind working hard for his team defensively when needed. He can shoot the ball with power from long range and has the eye to play some decisive passes in the final third.

The Dutch talent is a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet and can chip in by scoring and creating his fair share of goals from midfield. De Jong is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also serve as a defensive midfielder or as a centre-back if required. However, there are some question marks over whether he can adapt to the physical side and high intensity of the Premier League if the Mancunian giants manage to snap him up before the end of this transfer window.

We can expect De Jong to enhance the quality of Man City boss Enzo Maresca’s midfield department. He has what it takes to fight for a regular first-team spot at the Etihad Stadium.

At 29, De Jong is still playing in his prime and could be a real asset in Maresca’s squad over the next few seasons. Therefore, Man City would be wise to go for him in this transfer window.
