Manchester United are said to be making progress on a deal for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, with an initial offer worth up to £65 million, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
Baleba suffered an ankle injury in pre-season training in Vienna. The problem is said to be minor and has apparently not deterred United.
He limped out of a Friday session in Vienna before a friendly against Strasbourg, accompanied by a member of the club’s fitness staff. The following day he watched a 4-3 win on crutches with his foot and ankle in a protective boot. A few days later the extent was confirmed and was described as less serious than first feared.
Baleba is not expected to feature in Albion’s season-opener at Tromso in the Conference League play-off round and has not played in recent friendlies. There has been no comment from those around Albion.
United pursued the midfielder last summer but Albion were not minded to sell until at least this window, and possibly beyond. He remains a player of high potential with strong physical qualities.
United have been searching for a central midfielder for some time and are looking to build on a strong finale to last season under the management of Michael Carrick, who excelled in that role in his playing days.
