Manchester United are still exploring a deal to prise Arsenal prospect Myles Lewis-Skelly away, despite his recent run in Mikel Arteta’s starting XI.

According to The Sun, the 19-year-old has become a priority left-back target for Michael Carrick and United are refusing to step back as 1 September nears.

The need for defensive help has grown after a difficult start that included a 2-0 defeat at Hull City. United believe there could still be an opening to reach an agreement.

Arteta has been firm on the teenager’s future, saying he is 100 per cent confident Lewis-Skelly will not be moving this summer. He has also underlined the added value of homegrown players and the need to protect and develop them.

United’s search is sharpened by Luke Shaw’s situation, with the England full-back in his 13th season and into the final year of a deal that lacks an extension option. Carrick wants a specialist, having seen a move for Newcastle’s Lewis Hall rebuffed after earlier departures at St James’ Park.

Patrick Dorgu, Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui offer cover on the left, but none is viewed as the long-term answer. Lewis-Skelly, who broke through as a midfielder, adapted to senior football at left-back in 2024-25, a versatility prized by both managers.
