Defending champions Bayern Munich confirmed their role as favorites in the DFB Cup with a 3-0 victory over second-division side FC Ingolstadt in the round of 16.

After the intense Champions League clash against Arsenal, which the Munich side won 3:2, Barcala rotated six positions – and for a long time saw a game with a lot of possession but little yield. The hosts defended with discipline, fought back and were happy with a goalless draw at the break. However, Bayern missed three great chances to take the lead through Jovana Damnjanović. She hit the aluminum twice and once failed to beat goalkeeper Franziska Daum.

Dunst redeems the FCB – Schüller follows up

Shortly after the restart, Barbara Dunst broke the spell: after a cross from the right, she latched onto the ball on the edge of the penalty area, left two opponents standing and scored precisely into the bottom right-hand corner (50′). That broke the deadlock – and the game finally tipped in Munich’s favour.

Just seven minutes later, Lea Schüller made it 2:0. Giulia Gwinn had too much space on her side and crossed accurately to the five, where Schüller won the aerial duel and headed into the right corner (57′). The game was practically decided.

Natalia Padilla-Bidas, new to the game, provided the final goal in stoppage time: Gwinn again provided the assist, the cross again came from the right – this time Padilla-Bidas pushed the ball over the line with her head (90.+7).

Second division team put up a brave fight

Despite their clear dominance and high level of control, Bayern needed a little patience. The second-division side were outplayed, but did not allow themselves to be shot down and put up a brave fight, especially in the first half. The favourites then got serious in the second half, made more consistent use of their chances and did not let things get out of hand at the back.

With a well-deserved 3:0, FC Bayern advance to the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup. The next round will be drawn at the beginning of December – the exact date of the match has yet to be determined.
