Flamengo have adopted an enhanced security plan at the Maracanã for the Libertadores last-16 decider against Cruzeiro at 21:30 Brasília time on Wednesday.
According to GE, protective netting has been set up in the South Stand, usually home to away fans, to prevent cups and other objects being thrown.
Metal panels have also been fitted in the visitors’ area to reduce potential disorder, after clashes between some supporters during this season’s Brasileirão meeting at the ground. Flamengo agreed the measures with Rio de Janeiro’s Military Police.
More than 70,000 are in attendance, including an expected 3,000 Cruzeiro supporters.
The tie began on Wednesday 12 at the Mineirão, where Cruzeiro led through Arroyo before substitute Lucas Paquetá made it 1-1.
The return is finely poised, with the winners reaching the quarter-finals, and a draw taking it to penalties. The victors will face Tolima (COL) or Independente Del Valle (EQU). Rede Globo, GETV on YouTube and Paramount are broadcasting, while Coluna do Fla TV is providing on-site coverage.
