Marcelo Bielsa has reportedly confirmed he will step down as Uruguay manager after this summer’s World Cup.

According to a national journalist on X, Bielsa told a press conference their work would conclude with the World Cup and he thanked Uruguay for the chance to enjoy one.

He marked three years in charge earlier this month, having taken over in May 2023 after leaving Leeds the previous year. His side recorded historic back-to-back wins over Brazil and Argentina, a first since 1959.

Qualification means Bielsa is set for a third World Cup on a third continent. He led Argentina at Japan 2002, then took Chile to South Africa 2010, with this summer’s tournament staged across the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Despite progress, he has faced pressure, including public disagreements with senior players such as Luis Suarez. Calls for his sacking followed a 5-1 defeat to the USA in November, after which he held a lengthy press conference and said his plans were unchanged with the aim still the World Cup.

Uruguay, champions in 1930 and 1950, are in Group H, opening against Saudi Arabia on June 15, then Cape Verde on June 21 before Spain on June 27.
