Santos president Marcelo Teixeira has pushed back at Neymar’s call for more respect over João Basso’s departure, after the 29-year-old defender had his contract terminated and became a free agent.
According to Globo.com, Teixeira said on Thursday that club decisions are professional, suggested Neymar spoke out of emotion and friendship with Basso, and added that while they respect him, choices remain professional.
Neymar had posted a message on Wednesday wishing Basso luck, expressing sadness at the manner of his exit, describing his friend as highly professional and deserving greater respect, and promising support.
Neymar and Basso have become close since Neymar’s arrival at Santos. They also spend time together away from the club, with Basso a regular visitor to Neymar’s homes in the Baixada Santista and in Mangaratiba, Rio de Janeiro.
The board had hesitated over pursuing a termination because of that proximity to the number 10. Even so, they met the player in recent days and agreed the rescission, with Juan Pablo Vojvoda not planning to use him for the remainder of the year.
The club also sought room on the wage bill and in the squad, and have signed Lucas Veríssimo to bolster central defence. He has agreed a three-season contract after a spell in Qatar and will be one of the squad’s highest earners.
