Marcos Braz has condemned the CBF’s plan to cut the number of foreign players allowed per match, calling it a backward step, and praised Flamengo for opposing the change.

The former Flamengo vice-president of football said in a video post that restricting overseas players has never worked anywhere and would not contribute to Brazilian football.

He congratulated Flamengo for taking what he called a vanguard stance and stressed the position was not political, noting he led the club’s football department for seven years. Braz argued the market is globalised and that rowing against it is ineffective, warning it would hasten a regression in the Brazilian game.

Clubs from Série A and Série B have approved a phased reduction in the quota of foreigners per matchday squad, with Flamengo among the three votes against alongside Bahia and Londrina. The limit will fall from nine in 2026 to five by 2030, moving to eight in 2027, seven in 2028 and six in 2029.

During Braz’s tenure, Flamengo brought in several overseas reinforcements, including Pablo Marí, Mauricio Isla, Arturo Vidal, Matías Viña and Alcaraz.

Many of those signings have since departed. The current foreign contingent is Varela, Rossi, Arrascaeta, De La Cruz, Saúl Ñíguez, Carrascal, Plata, Pulgar, Anthony Valencia and Joaquín Freitas.
