According to L'Équipe, Canadian prime minister Mark Carney said on Wednesday he has no confidence in Gianni Infantino after the FIFA president’s aborted push to open the governing body to private investors.

Carney had worked closely with Infantino in recent months while organising the 2026 World Cup. He said the withholding of information from closest advisers amounted to fatal governance. Canada co-hosted the tournament this summer with the United States and Mexico.

The 61-year-old liberal leader, appointed in March 2025, noted his own experience running major institutions, including the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020.

Infantino, in charge of FIFA for 10 years, has pursued divisive projects. Last week he announced plans to create an external company, the FIFA Forward Entreprise, FFE, to manage commercial activities and tournaments, including World Cups, with private investors.

Resistance has since grown inside FIFA, alongside pressure from UEFA and from Concacaf, which torpedoed the FFE proposal before directly criticising Infantino.

He remains the only declared candidate for another term, with a secret-ballot vote scheduled for March 2027 in Rabat. From Morocco, FIFA’s leadership issued an apology after a crisis meeting on Wednesday evening, while reaffirming full support for Infantino.
