Unai Marrero seized his chance on the final day, his display for Real Sociedad reopening the debate over who starts in goal next season.

According to AS, Álex Remiro will learn on Monday whether Luis de la Fuente has picked him for this summer’s World Cup. Calf discomfort before the last round denied him a complete 38-game league season.

Marrero, making his first appearance since the Copa final, looked assured, claimed crosses and produced a standout stop from Roberto in the second half. Coach Pellegrino Matarazzo said the keeper had an excellent match and prevented further Espanyol goals.

Both Remiro and Marrero will share the position next term. This season Marrero handled the Copa while Remiro played the league, and the 26-27 campaign will also bring the Supercopa and Europa League.

The American coach has repeatedly expressed pride in his two goalkeepers, but his selections remain to be seen. Remiro has one year left on his Real Sociedad deal, and Marrero extended in February to 2030.
