Marseille qualified for the competition after missing out on the Champions League last season, triggering UEFA scrutiny of their accounts. They were cleared to compete on the condition the wage bill was significantly reduced.

The constraints led to exits of key players, including Mason Greenwood, Facundo Medina and Geromino Rulli. Despite those sales, Marseille could not register a single signing.

Under new manager Bruno Genesio, they have lost their last three Ligue 1 matches. They now start their Europa League campaign against Besiktas with a significantly weaker squad than last season.

Following an internal debate, the club chose to honour their Europa League place. Had they only qualified for the Europa Conference League, they would have renounced participation.
