Olympique de Marseille are set to record another heavy loss in 2024/25, with a net deficit of about €37m, close to last season's €39m.
L'Équipe reports that owner Frank McCourt approved a €94.5m cash injection at the club's June general assembly, aimed at covering past deficits rather than expansion.
Since buying the club in 2016, McCourt has presided over unbroken losses, with the cumulative shortfall nearing €500m, worsened by Covid-19 and the collapse of Ligue 1's broadcast market.
Domestic TV rights offer limited upside, with even a Ligue 1 title bringing in under €30m. By contrast, this season's Champions League prize money is already close to €50m, with scope for more depending on results.
The squad's value is estimated near €400m, yet Marseille continue to underperform on net transfer balance, prioritising competitiveness over trading profits. Mandatory purchase options, including Facundo Medina and Timothy Weah, will weigh on future accounts.
Costs remain high. Agent commissions reached nearly €21m in 2023-24, while new off-field projects at the Vélodrome add further pressure.
Revenues are rising and are expected to hit €240m this season, but balance remains elusive. For OM, sustained Champions League qualification appears the only viable route to stability.
