Marseille’s Derek Cornelius may face a long lay-off after a non-contact lower-body injury with Canada on Wednesday. The Canadian federation said he was taken to a local hospital following the training session in Toronto.

Canada manager Jesse Marsch said the issue is in the hip. He explained that during a competitive three-team drill, Cornelius and Jonathan David chased a ball into a corner, Cornelius leaned in, his knee caught in the turf and his hip reacted.

Marsch added it could resemble the hip tendon rupture suffered by Promise David in February. He said they are crossing their fingers it is not severe, but it could keep Cornelius out for several months.

Cornelius returned to Marseille in the summer after a loan at Rangers last season. He has featured sparingly, logging 26 minutes in Ligue 1 and 67 in the UEFA Europa League.

A start against Besiktas in the UEL hinted at a rotation role in Bruno Genesio’s stretched squad. Any extended absence would be another setback for Marseille.
