Olympique de Marseille defender Derek Cornelius suffered a non-contact lower-body injury while on duty with Canada.

The federation said in a statement on Wednesday that the 28-year-old was hurt during training in Toronto, was transported to a local hospital, and is receiving care ahead of further assessment.

Cornelius returned to Marseille in the summer after a loan spell at Rangers last season.

He has been used sparingly this term, playing 26 minutes in Ligue 1 and a further 67 minutes in the UEFA Europa League.

A start against Besiktas in the Europa League suggested he was being lined up as a rotation option in a threadbare OM squad. His injury would be a further blow for head coach Bruno Genesio.
