Marshall Munetsi has questioned his omission from Zimbabwe’s AFCON squad after a calf injury, with explanations differing over the decision.
The vice-captain suffered a calf problem against Crystal Palace and, despite helping his country qualify, was left out of the finals. He told The Herald the club had not ruled him out of the group stage, only warned the opener would be risky, and that he feels no pain, describing the stance as caution. He was not the only Wolves man omitted, with Tolu Arokodare dropped by Nigeria.
The 29-year-old believes his exclusion is linked to new head coach Marian Marinica’s arrival, and claims the national team do not want him.
Since Marinica’s appointment in November, he has yet to feature under him. During the last international break Wolves asked him to remain in England, though the player later posted that the club would support him to play for Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe FA president Nqobile Magwizi later cited the absence of a club waiver and an inability to assume injury costs. The two positions remain at odds.
