Roberto Martínez has explained Raphaël Guerreiro’s omission from Portugal’s squad, saying the defender is not under consideration after he asked to sit out the Nations League.

According to Glorioso 1904, speaking after unveiling his picks at the Cidade do Futebol in Oeiras, Martínez said the staff must respect the player’s wish, so he is not on their lists for that competition.

Benfica duo António Silva and Tomás Araújo were called up. With João Cancelo, João Neves, João Félix, Gonçalo Ramos and Gonçalo Guedes also included, the two centre-backs will face Mexico and the USA.

This season for Bayern Munich, Raphaël Guerreiro has played 22 times, 12 in the Bundesliga, seven in the UEFA Champions League, two in the DFB-Pokal and one in the Super Cup. Across 881 minutes, he has four goals and two assists.

In December he was linked with Benfica as a potential addition, with the club monitoring his situation and weighing a formal bid. The left-footer is valued at 6 million euros.
