Matheus Cunha has congratulated Mateus Mane after the teenager’s first senior goal for Wolves, leaving a message on the academy graduate’s Instagram following his impressive showing against West Ham.
According to Molineux.news, the 18-year-old has broken into the starting XI in recent weeks and transformed Wolves’ attack. He is contracted until 2029 and has drawn praise, with Hwang Hee-chan among team-mates impressed.
Although the pair rarely overlapped on the pitch, they trained together. Mane’s only senior outing while Cunha was still at Molineux came after the Brazilian had been substituted, so they narrowly missed playing in tandem.
On Mane’s post after the West Ham display, Cunha wrote in Portuguese to congratulate him, say he deserved it and send love to his family.
Mane’s impact has been striking, and his first senior goal set a new piece of club history. Rob Edwards has called him a leader.
There are similarities with Cunha, from confidence on the ball to a determination to carry play forward and take on defenders, as shown by that Cunha-esque finish against West Ham.
It is still early days, so expectations should be kept in check. Let him enjoy his football and, if the trajectory continues, the comparisons can follow.
