Mathieu Cafaro could match Ligue 2 record by helping Nantes return to Ligue 1 | OneFootball

Mathieu Cafaro could equal a Ligue 2 record if he helps Nantes return to Ligue 1. The midfielder has already gone up three times, with Reims in 2018, Saint-Étienne in 2024 and Paris FC in 2025.

L'Équipe notes that more than 50 players have managed the feat, yet eight share the record for most promotions to Ligue 1 with four.

Only one did all four with a single team, Nicolas Seube at Caen.

Several have also been crowned Ligue 2 champions twice, including Benjamin Nivet and Matthieu Saunier. Only Geoffrey Doumeng has three Ligue 2 titles, with Nancy in 2005, Valenciennes in 2006 and Lens in 2009.

The four-time promotees are: Mathias Autret (Brest 2010 and 2019, Caen 2014, Auxerre 2022), Frédéric Adam (Rennes 1994, Châteauroux 1997, Troyes 1999 and 2005), Christophe Bastien (Nancy 1996 and 1998, Metz 2003, Sedan 2006), Geoffrey Doumeng (Montpellier 2001, Nancy 2005, Valenciennes 2006, Lens 2009).

Completing the list are Nicolas Seube (Caen 2004, 2007, 2010, 2014), Benjamin Nivet (Troyes 2005, 2015 and 2017, Caen 2010), Yoann Poulard (Le Mans 2003 and 2005, Nantes 2008, Ajaccio 2011) and Matthieu Saunier (Troyes 2012, 2015 and 2017, Lorient 2020).
