Matt Doherty targets Premier League return after Sheffield United move | OneFootball

Matt Doherty has set his sights on a Premier League return after agreeing to join Sheffield United.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 34-year-old full-back has signed a one-year deal at Bramall Lane with an option of a further 12 months, arriving on a free after 13 years with Wolves across two spells.

He said a conversation with Chris Wilder and familiarity with Bramall Lane’s atmosphere convinced him, and he backs the manager to take the Blades back up, describing that as the shared aim. He added that he believes in the manager and is confident the manager believes in his players.

The Republic of Ireland international has 53 caps and made 389 Wolves appearances across two spells between 2010 and 2020, then 2023 to 2026. In between he featured for Tottenham and Atletico Madrid, having initially cost Wolves £75,000 from Bohemians in 2010.

He won League One and Championship titles with Wolves, played in Europe, and the club labelled him a “club legend” on his exit. He will face his former side in the Championship this season.

Wilder welcomed his arrival, saying Doherty understands what success requires, remains driven, and can raise standards within the squad, calling him a culture carrier. Sheffield United finished 13th in the Championship last season.
