Matthäus makes a bold prediction: Bayern will win the championship by a “ten-point margin” | OneFootball

FC Bayern enters the new Bundesliga season as the clear favorite. For Lothar Matthäus, there’s not even a question as to whether the Munich team will defend its title. Rather, the all-time leading German international expects another dominant season from FCB—and a clear lead over the competition.

After winning the German championship last season, Bayern aims to remain the team to beat nationally in 2026–27 as well. While Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig, and VfB Stuttgart will try to close the gap on the record champions, Matthäus currently sees no serious contenders for Vincent Kompany’s team.

In his column for Sky, the 65-year-old makes a remarkably clear prediction: “Bayern will be champions again by a margin of at least ten points.”

Matthäus does not expect a close title race. For him, the question is rather which club will establish itself as the closest challenger behind the Munich side.

Matthäus sees Bayern in a league of its own

“For me, the more exciting question is therefore not who will win the title, but how the teams chasing Bayern will line up behind them,” explained the former Bayern pro.

Matthäus believes Borussia Dortmund, in particular, has what it takes to position itself as the number two team in German soccer. He noted that BVB has strengthened its squad well and, at the same time, created financial flexibility through several departures.

Bayer Leverkusen, VfB Stuttgart, and RB Leipzig are also likely to play a role in the top third of the table, according to the 1990 World Cup champion. However, Matthäus does not currently expect any of these clubs to mount a serious challenge to Bayern.

His prediction thus underscores the starting point ahead of the season opener: After winning the double, the record champions still have the strongest squad in the Bundesliga and further bolstered it over the summer with the signings of Ismael Saibari and Nathaniel Brown.

Kompany aims to continue the dominance

However, the clear role as favorites is unlikely to tempt anyone in Munich to take the Bundesliga lightly. Kompany and the club’s leadership repeatedly emphasized during preseason that last season’s successes are no guarantee of further titles.

Especially after the World Cup summer and the shortened preseason, Bayern will first need to find their rhythm. Numerous key players joined training late, while some injured stars are still working on their comebacks.

Nevertheless, Matthäus is convinced that the individual quality and depth of Bayern’s roster will ultimately make the difference.
