At first glance, Mauro Icardi and Armando González have almost nothing in common. That is exactly why this development is useful. Di Marzio says Olympiacos made an offer to Icardi, who rejected it. Hours later, Greek reporting described Olympiacos as pushing hard to close González. That reveals a striker search built around different possible solutions rather than one fixed archetype.

At 33, Icardi would have been a short-term, high-level scoring solution. No developmental patience, no adaptation projection, no resale logic, the attraction would be immediate penalty-box production and pedigree.

That is the veteran route.

González represents the opposite investment thesis

He is 23. He costs a transfer fee. He carries adaptation risk.

So once the Icardi avenue closed, moving aggressively on González makes strategic sense if the club believes the Mexican can contribute now rather than two years from now.

This is important. A club simply looking for an inexpensive reserve striker does not typically make a serious approach for Mauro Icardi. That tells us Mendilibar and Marinakis want a second No.9 capable of materially influencing big matches. The post-NEC mandate is not about roster filling. It is about raising the level of alternatives.

González may fit the squad better long term

Icardi would have created an immediate question: how do you manage his role alongside El Kaabi?

Two established veteran scorers generally both expect to play. González presents a more natural succession/rotation model. El Kaabi remains the current reference point. González develops, competes and can gradually inherit a larger role. That is structurally cleaner.

The opportunity cost is different

A free-agent Icardi requires salary. A young González requires transfer capital. Those costs affect the club differently. Olympiacos appear willing to spend significant acquisition money on a younger asset if the veteran-star route is not available. That may ultimately be the smarter allocation, particularly after missing Champions League revenue.
