Lazio are reportedly plotting an ambitious move, as they hope to bring Mauro Icardi back to Italian football.

The Background

Gennaro Gattuso has identified the signing of a new striker as his top priority on the market, but the club hasn’t found any joy on this front, missing out on several targets, including Carlos Espi and Franjo Ivanovic. Sassuolo’s Andrea Pinamonti might be the more plausible arrival, but he isn’t the most convincing profile.

Lazio Make Contact With Mauro Icardi

According to Sky Sport Italia journalist Emanuele Baiocchini (as relayed by Gianluca Di Marzio), Lazio sporting director Angelo Fabiani has contacted Icardi’s entourage, in what the source describes as a ‘crazy idea’. The Argentine bomber has been a free agent since the start of the summer after seeing out his contract with Galatasaray.

Can Lazio Afford Icardi?

The report admits that bringing the 33-year-old to Formello remains a complicated move, mainly due to the economic factor. Moreover, the striker is apparently biding his time, awaiting an offer from a Champions League club. Nevertheless, Baiocchini believes a return to Serie A could also represent a tempting prospect for the player.

Icardi’s Career Path: Highs, Lows & Controversy

Icardi is a Barcelona academy product who left the Spanish giants in pursuit of a prominent role. In 2011, he signed for Sampdoria, and immediately became a revelation at the Marassi.

Two years later, the striker moved to Inter Milan and went on to become captain, before leaving the club in 2019 on a sour note due to a controversial locker-room incident sparked by his ex-wife and agent, Wanda Nara, who criticized some of his teammates in public. Following a three-year spell at Paris Saint-Germain, he joined Galatasaray in 2022, cementing himself as a key figure at the club.

Icardi’s Career Figures

Throughout his career, Icardi maintained highly impressive scoring numbers. At Sampdoria, he netted 30 times in 39 appearances. He left Inter with 124 goals from 229 games, before scoring 38 goals in his 92 PSG appearances, while mostly playing a secondary role. Finally, he bagged 77 goals for Galatasaray in 134 matches.
