Lazio are exploring an ambitious move for Mauro Icardi, with sporting director Angelo Fabiani having contacted the striker’s entourage, Sky Sport Italia reports. The move has been described as a 'crazy idea'. The Argentine has been a free agent since the start of the summer after his Galatasaray contract ended.
Gennaro Gattuso has prioritised a new centre-forward but Lazio have missed out on several targets, including Carlos Espi and Franjo Ivanovic. Sassuolo’s Andrea Pinamonti is seen as a more plausible option, though his profile is not fully convincing.
Any deal to bring Icardi to Formello is considered complicated, chiefly for financial reasons. The 33-year-old is understood to be waiting for an offer from a Champions League club, although a Serie A return could also appeal.
A Barcelona academy product, Icardi left in search of regular football and joined Sampdoria in 2011, quickly emerging at Marassi.
He moved to Inter two years later and became captain, before departing in 2019 after controversy sparked by his ex-wife and agent Wanda Nara publicly criticising some team-mates. Following a three-year spell at Paris Saint-Germain, he joined Galatasaray in 2022 and established himself as a key figure.
His scoring record has been prolific, with 30 goals in 39 games for Sampdoria. He hit 124 in 229 for Inter, then 38 in 92 at PSG where he often played a secondary role, and 77 in 134 for Galatasaray.
