Chelsea forward Mayra Ramirez has suffered an injury setback ahead of her expected return to training.
Mayra Ramirez has not played a minute of competitive action for Chelsea during the 2025-26 season.
The Colombian striker suffered a hamstring injury during a pre-season friendly against AC Milan back in September.
This required her to undergo surgery, and she has been a miss for the Blues after scoring 10 goals in 33 appearances across all competitions last season.
Ahead of Chelsea’s WSL clash with Tottenham on Sunday, head coach Sonia Bompastor revealed that Ramirez was expected to return to training in the last few days.
However, the 26-year-old will have a longer wait on her hands after suffering a calf injury during rehabilitation.
Bompastor said: “Mayra was supposed to come back on the pitch the last few days, but she picked up a little injury in her rehab, in her calf, so I don’t have any timeline for now.”
It is another blow for Chelsea who failed to sign any player during the January transfer window, after missing out on midfielder Jennifer Echegini.
Chelsea are also coming off a 5-1 defeat to Manchester City, which effectively ended their hopes of winning seven straight WSL titles.
Ramirez joined Chelsea for 450,000 euros (£384,000) in January 2024. At the time, she was the second most expensive signing in women’s football history, following Keira Walsh’s £400,000 move from Manchester City to Barcelona in 2022.
She scored three goals and provided two assists to help Chelsea win the 2023-24 title, before later finishing 21st in that year’s Ballon d’Or rankings.
Last season, she netted 10 goals and six assists in all competitions.
Her last appearance in any game was for Copa America Femenina final against Brazil. It was one of the all-time great finals with Ramirez scoring in a 4-4 draw, which Brazil won on penalties.
Chelsea are desperate to return to winning ways after their 5-1 loss to Manchester City.
Questions over Sonia Bompastor’s future have been raised since the defeat, where Kerolin became the first player to score a hat-trick against Chelsea in the WSL.
It came on a day when Chelsea suffered their first back-to-back defeat since July 2015, and their biggest loss since a 5-0 thrashing by Arsenal in September 2018.
Chelsea now face a battle to qualify for next season’s Champions League, and a win over Tottenham would be a positive result towards accomplishing that.
