Marseille collapsed 0-2 at Lorient on Saturday, a lifeless display that pushed them further from the Ligue 1 podium and drew the ire of director of football Medhi Benatia, according to L'Équipe.
It was their third defeat in four league matches. The slide follows a 0-3 loss at Bruges on 28 January that ended their Champions League league phase, then a 0-5 thrashing in Paris on 8 February that prompted Roberto De Zerbi’s exit and Habib Beye’s arrival. They could finish Sunday night in sixth.
Having resigned then reversed that decision, Benatia had not spoken publicly until Lorient. He accepted scrutiny over coaching appointments and signings, yet labelled the display a scandal and railed at a lack of fight, saying no one upended a table and everything in the dressing room stayed neatly in place. He added that with five finals left in the race for the Champions League, the desire should have been obvious, but it was not.
The recent Marbella camp only lightened the club’s coffers. Benatia told players not to plan anything for the next four weeks, promising longer days together at La Commanderie, training morning and afternoon with a siesta, saying everything needs work.
Beye was furious in the dressing room and more restrained before the media. He judged the display unacceptable and admitted his selections were wrong. He will make changes against Nice next Sunday at 20:45, but options looked thin after Timothy Weah replaced Igor Paixao at half-time with a calf issue, with a bench of Ligue 1 debutants and players set to leave. With four matches left, the club appears adrift.
