Memphis Depay has used social media to deny claims he asked not to play for Corinthians against Flamengo.
The rumour suggested a minor muscle issue and that he preferred to save himself for Wednesday’s Libertadores quarter-finals against Estudiantes. According to Meu Timao, Fernando Diniz is expected to rest most starters for that tie, so Memphis is unlikely to face Flamengo, though he will be available if required.
The forward missed much of the first half of the year with fitness problems. In March he was forced off in the first half against Flamengo after straining the anterior muscle in his right thigh.
That injury ruled him out of the Netherlands’ final pre-World Cup friendlies against Norway and Ecuador. He did not play for Corinthians again until May, returning in a win over Atlético Mineiro.
Since renewing his deal on 18 August, he has featured in all five Corinthians matches, totalling 309 minutes on the pitch.
