Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands side had no problems dispatching Finland on Sunday evening to all but secure their spot at next years World Cup. The side triumphed 4-0 and, depending on Poland’s result against Lithuania, just need to avoid defeat to the Poles in their next game to book their spot at the 2026 edition of the tournament.
The Netherlands, the seventh ranked side in the World, were 3-0 up by half-time and cruising. Memphis Depay provided the assist for the opening goal from Donyell Malen, with Virgil van Dijk adding a second just under 10 minutes later as Depay provided his second assist of the game. Depay was then given a chance to grab one for himself from the spot just before half-time, which he took. The sides dominance of the game was fully confirmed late on when Cody Gakpo made it 4-0.
The results means the Dutch have a six point lead over Poland going into tonight’s fixtures. For Finland, they remain in contention to finish second, especially with Malta and Andorra to come. Poland face the Dutch and then Malta, a game they will be confident of winning and finishing second as a result.
