Merino compares Dowman to World Cup winner

Max Dowman has been compared to World Cup winner Lamine Yamal after delivering a superb performance against Ipswich Town in the Carabao Cup.

Dowman has struggled for game time this term, but he did enough to earn a starting spot against Town, with Mikel Arteta believing the youngster could cause problems for their opponents. The opportunity gave him the chance to show what he can offer.

Dowman Takes His Chance

Using Dowman also allowed Arteta to rest top players such as Bukayo Saka, meaning the 16-year-old had to take his opportunity. He did exactly that, producing a performance that reminded everyone why he is regarded as a generational talent.

The attacker is still only 16, yet he continues to deliver fine performances whenever he plays. His ability to perform despite his age has attracted plenty of attention, and Mikel Merino has now compared him to Lamine Yamal, who plays alongside him in the Spanish national team.

Dowman still has a long way to go before he can match the level of the Spanish star, particularly when considering what Yamal has already achieved on the books of Barcelona and the way he performs at the highest level.

However, Merino believes there are similarities between the two youngsters, having been teammates of both prodigies. He believes their character and approach to pressure are among the qualities they share.

Merino Sees Similarities Between the Prodigies

Speaking about the comparison, Merino said via Goal:

‘Yeah, I would say there are some similarities in terms of their character.

‘They don’t care about the spotlight. They thrive when pressure is at the highest. They are always up for the challenge and they are not shy at all – even facing the biggest names in the game. So, they are very similar.

‘Honestly, he (Dowman) is an unbelievable talent.’

The comparison will inevitably create further excitement around Dowman, but his immediate focus will be on continuing to develop and taking advantage of the opportunities Arteta gives him. His performance against Ipswich has provided another indication of his potential.
