Mikel Arteta has challenged Max Dowman to earn his place as Arsenal visit Ipswich Town in the Carabao Cup third round.

"Max will have his chance," the Arsenal boss told the club's official website. "He will have his minutes, and he will have to earn them like anybody else. We know the talent that we have, we know the players that we have there, and we need to help him and find a way to make sure that he continues to develop and help the team."

The cup carries personal significance for Dowman, who made his first Arsenal start in last season’s fourth round, a 2-0 win over Brighton. The 16-year-old has been an unused substitute four times this term, including the recent trip to Italy to face Napoli, as Arteta manages his workload.

Competition for places in midfield is fierce, and the Carabao Cup offers a window to stake a claim. Rotation is expected at Portman Road, yet standards for younger players remain high.

This tie is Arsenal’s third competition in quick succession, after a Premier League win over Chelsea, a Champions League trip to Naples and three points against Sunderland. "We'll look at the players' eyes and they will say they want to play, and 'I want to win a game, and I want to improve'." "They will review the [Sunderland] game, and they will be willing for more because I know the boys."
