Milan wouldn’t mind adding a new striker in January, but they need to offload Santiago Gimenez first, both to make room and to raise some funds. They spent big during the summer, but only their cheapest acquisitions have panned out so far.
According to Tuttomercatoweb, Massimiliano Allegri would like to bring in a hulking center-forward who can hold the ball and go toe-to-toe with the opposing defenders physically. Somebody like Niclas Fullkrug, but the front office is unlikely to go for a 32-year-old. Plus, there’s nothing in the works regarding Jonathan David despite some chatter about a potential trade between stuttering center-forwards.
The Milan officials and the Santiago Gimenez camp are looking for buyers in the Premier League. He was acquired for €23M last January. The Rossoneri are seeking a comparable sum. While it’s a difficult proposition, it’s not impossible. For instance, Noah Okafor transferred to Leeds United for €19M despite struggling at San Siro.
West Ham and Sunderland have shown preliminary interest, TuttoSport informs. As for his replacement, Midtjylland’s Franculino is the top candidate but has a significant price tag. Artem Dovbyk lingers as an option, but no longer in a swap. The alternatives are Parma’s Mateo Pellegrino and Strasbourg’s Joaquin Panichelli, but both will be difficult to onboard in January.
Giving up on something after just a year filled with turmoil isn’t great, especially since he hasn’t been 100 percent for most of it, isn’t great, but he also didn’t help himself on the pitch. They are eyeing intriguing youngsters, but one has to wonder whether any of them would really help them right away, considering their coach’s style and idiosyncrasies.
