Milan Reportedly Made Late Attempt for Atalanta Star

Milan didn’t sign a new defender but was active in trying to find one on deadline day, even though their attempts were in vain. In particular, they tested the waters for Giorgio Scalvini. However, Atalanta asked for €40M, and there were no grounds for the talks to continue, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.

La Dea are dealing with some issues at the position. Isak Hien is out long-term and newcomer Thomas Kristensen is nursing an ankle injury. Plus, they had already set up the departure of Honest Ahanor and didn’t need to make further profits.

Lecce had a similar stance regarding Tiago Gabriel, although the talks were more between them and his agent Jorge Mendes rather than directly with Milan. In the end, the Rossoneri stood pat and simply reintegrated Fikayo Tomori, who had been ousted earlier in the summer.

According to Calciomercato, owner Gerry Cardinale and Ruben Amorim decided that other center-backs weren’t worth the squeeze and to lean on the Englishman for at least the next few months. He personally refused every destination, including Fulham, which pursued him most aggressively late in the window.

Our Take on Milan and Scalvini

It would have been a bold acquisition that would have aligned perfectly with the other summer ones. He’s a far more convincing option than Tiago Gabriel, who had a nice start last season but has plateaued for quite some time. It wouldn’t have hurt to mix things up in terms of representation either, as it’s dangerous to get too much in bed with one agent, as he ultimately cares more about his interests than any club’s.
