Millwall vs Sheffield United – Preview

Sheffield United face a tough trip to The Den to take on Millwall on high-flying Saturday afternoon.

Millwall are currently sitting fifth in the Championship and have lost just once in their last seven league matches. The home side will be full of confidence heading into this weekend after dismantling Charlton Athletic 4-0 last time out.

Meanwhile, the Blades managed to stop their losing run by beating Ipswich Town 3-1 at Bramall Lane despite finishing the game with ten men. United are now six points above the drop zone and nine points behind the play-offs.

Team News

Alex Neil will have a new player to integrate into the matchday squad after Millwall announced the signing of Barry Bannan from Sheffield Wednesday earlier this week. Massimo Luongo will be unavailable for the rest of the campaign due to a cruciate ligament injury. While Millwall could also be without Will Smallbone, Lukas Jensen, and experienced left-back Joe Bryan.

The Blades have three players suspended for this fixture; Japhet Tanganga and Djibril Soumare serve the last of their three-match ban, while Patrick Bamford serves a game on the sidelines. Jairo Riedewald (hamstring) and Tyler Bindon (illness) will continue to be monitored for the trip down to London.

Millwall’s Impact Player For This Game

Femi Azeez has had a remarkable season this term having scored seven times and serving up two assists in just 18 Championship appearances.

Azeez is capable of playing on either flank but also as number ten. He has excelled at chance creation this season, averaging over two chances created per game. He’s also shown his qualities from a dribbling point of view with almost two successful dribbles per game. Azeez isn’t the most skillful, but he makes up for that with power dribbling which makes him hard to knock off the ball.

Azeez will likely occupy the right-winger role so he will likely be coming up against Sam McCallum. With both players being good athletically, this should be a fun battle to watch within the contest.

Sheffield United’s Impact Player For This Game

One player who has barely had an impact in recent weeks is Tyrese Campbell, but with Patrick Bamford suspended for this game, he will likely be given a start and I believe he could match up well against the Millwall back line.

Campbell has a burst of speed that none of the other United strikers possess. Unfortunately for him, he’s looked out of sorts for the past month. Nevertheless, we cannot forget how he can seemingly turn up with a bit of quality whenever he’s in the mood.

The Blades’ forward gets a lot of touches in the opposition box, averaging over five per game. While he will be coming up against bigger and stronger centre-backs on Saturday, he has the agility advantage which will worry the likes of Jake Cooper and Tristan Crama if he isolates them one-vs-one.

One thing Campbell has done well this season is his defending from the front. He averages almost one possession won in the final third per game, this aligns perfectly with the theme of United’s campaign; they’ve been excellent at pressing.

What’s interesting this weekend is that Millwall often try to bypass the opposition press with their direct style of play, so this may neutralise a key part of United’s system. Yet, Millwall’s defence is less polished on the ball so mistakes could still be forced with the likes of Campbell and O’Hare leading the press.

My Prediction

Millwall are in a very strong position in the league, which was quite similar to last season before they eventually fell off a cliff and into mid-table. Momentum is strong with the home side at the minute, but the Blades are coming into this one after dominating Ipswich Town last weekend.

Again, United will be contending with suspension and injury issues. In spite of that, I think this game will play out to be a 1-1 score draw, something the Blades have only managed to do once this season.
