Mircea Lucescu, 80, has reportedly suffered a heart attack while in a Bucharest hospital, according to L'Équipe. His health had been weakened in recent months.
The cardiac event came a day after the end of his collaboration with Romania was announced. It occurred while he was awaiting discharge following an earlier cardiac episode that struck three days after Romania were knocked out in the 2026 World Cup play-off semi-finals.
A recent malaise had already prevented him from travelling to Slovakia for a friendly.
He has been hospitalised several times in recent months due to illness. The former Romania international won 65 caps and also coached the Türkiye national team.
He is said to have been revived after three resuscitation attempts and is currently in A&E awaiting further tests. Appointed in August 2024 on a two-year deal, he did not manage to return the team to the World Cup, which would have been their first since 1998.
