Monaco right-back Vanderson, 24, will undergo surgery on his left thigh and could be sidelined for at least three months, Globo reports, jeopardising his World Cup prospects.

He was forced off during Monaco’s 3-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain last Friday and is now out of Brazil’s friendlies against Croatia on the first of April and France on 26 May.

It is a heavy setback for the Rondonópolis-born defender, whose chances of featuring at the tournament in the United States are greatly diminished.

Carlo Ancelotti is due to announce his squad on 19 May, several weeks before Vanderson is expected to be back on the pitch.

Fellow Monaco and Brazil defender Caio Henrique, 28, also missed the March international window through injury but is expected to return in April, giving him a chance to press his case for selection.
