Absent during the decisive stages of AFCON 2025, Azzedine Ounahi left a notable void in Morocco’s midfield. Sidelined due to injury, the midfielder missed all the knockout matches, sitting out the clashes against Tanzania, Cameroon, Nigeria, and then the final against Senegal.

Despite his absence, Ounahi made the decision to stay with the squad, even fueling hopes of a swift comeback after returning to ball work in training, while his medical staff had initially suggested a longer layoff. Ultimately, that scenario never materialized.

This Wednesday, Girona FC released an update on his condition:

“Azzedine Ounahi underwent medical tests yesterday for the injury he sustained with Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations. The player is suffering from an injury to the sole of his left foot. His progress will determine when he returns to training.”
