Mouctar Diakhaby went off injured, dealing Valencia a fresh defensive setback as Carlos Corberán faces three pivotal fixtures with only one fit centre-back, César Tárrega. AS reports that it is his fifth injury in the last three seasons, during which he has missed 79 of 115 matches.

He was withdrawn on 62 minutes after feeling pain in his right leg. Eight minutes earlier Corberán had replaced Pepelu with Tárrega, a switch that seemed aimed at Diakhaby given his record and a planned recovery.

Tests will determine the extent, but he will be out at least until after the international break.

The setback deepens Corberán’s selection problems, with De Haas and Copete already in the treatment room.

Those matches, against Sevilla, Alavés and Real Sociedad, are decisive for the head coach’s future.

The situation also confirms the staff had wanted to add a centre-back on deadline day, which Ron Gourlay played down last Thursday by saying the squad had three centre-backs. Guido is also unavailable.
