Spain, led by Claudia Pina, staged a second half comeback to defeat England and secure a place in the UEFA Women’s Nations League final four. Spain hosted England in a highly anticipated clash between two of Europe’s elite women’s football national teams.

From the start, Aitana Bonmatí led the midfield with her signature intensity and vision, delivering key passes and orchestrating every attack. Up front, Esther González posed the biggest threat with her constant movement and pressing.

England strike first

Despite Spain’s early control, England found the net first. After a questionable foul on Salma Paralluelo, the Lionesses launched a quick counter. A scramble in the box ended with Alessia Russo finishing calmly, putting the visitors ahead. There is no VAR at this Nations League point, so the goal stood. However, Spain protested a possible penalty just moments before, but the referee waved to play on.

The match felt like a UEFA Women’s Champions League final: high quality and high tension. Spain kept the ball but couldn’t penetrate England’s well-organised defense. On the left flank, Mariona Caldentey tried to combine with Olga Carmona, but Lucy Bronze broke through that side multiple times, pushing England forward.

In midfield, Keira Walsh impressed with sharp passing through the lines, keeping England dangerous in transition.

Claudia Pina changes everything

The turning point came in the 60th minute when Pina entered the match. Just moments later, the young Catalan striker combined with Patri Guijarro on a quick one-two and calmly slotted home the equalizer. The crowd erupted — the goal meant Spain were back in control of their Nations League destiny.

After England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton required medical assistance, the Lionesses took the opportunity for a quick tactical regrouping. But nothing could stop Pina.

Minutes later, Ona Batlle playing as a midfielder, fed Pina, who dribbled past Esme Morgan and unleashed a rocket from outside the box. The shot slammed into the left post and bounced in. Two goals in ten minutes for the forward, turning the match on its head.

Up next

The road to glory continues for both Spain and England, as they now turn their focus to the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025, which kicks off on July 2nd in Switzerland. Spain head into the tournament as the reigning world and Nations League champions, while England, the current Euro title holders, will be looking to defend their crown. With both teams stacked with talent and ambition, all signs point to a thrilling summer of football in the heart of Europe.
