Goalkeepers took centre stage as Morocco qualified on penalties after a late equaliser against the Netherlands. According to L'Équipe, Yassine Bounou's shoot-out heroics eclipsed Bart Verbruggen's outstanding display.
Verbruggen denied El-Aynoui's point-blank header on 20 minutes, then tipped away Hakimi's effort a minute later. He was helped by the bar on 52 and the post on 62, saved low on 58, but was beaten by Diop's header on 90+1 before a sharp stop from Rahimi on 97.
In the shoot-out, Bounou saved one Dutch kick with a firm hand and his presence influenced two further misses off target or onto the woodwork. Verbruggen twice saw his frame come to his aid, yet he could not keep out Rahimi's attempt.
Bounou, Diop and Verbruggen were all marked eight. Diop, marauding late from defence for a memorable goal, had earlier dominated in the air and read passing lanes.
Van Hecke earned seven, stood up to the contest, won five of six aerial duels and made a vital sliding tackle despite a bloodied head.
Brobbey received four after 13 touches and a shaky night, nearly losing El-Aynoui at a 20th-minute corner, before Weghorst came on and started the 72nd-minute move with a cushioned header.
Gravenberch also took four, bright early but lacking drive thereafter. For Morocco, Bouaddi struggled in possession and in recovery, then was replaced by El Mourabet on 79. Diaz was rated three and was largely invisible aside from defensive tracking.
